The Shadow of Atlantis Blog Tour

Carpinello's Writing Pages is excited to participate in The Shadow of Atlantis Pump Up Your Book Blog Tour. This is the first book in the Shadows of the Past MG series. I just love these books. Each is an exciting adventure into past history and full of surprises!

About the Book:

 Title: THE SHADOW OF ATLANTIS

Author: Wendy Leighton-Porter
Publisher: Silver Quill Publishing
Pages: 128

Genre: Middle Grade Literature / Time Travel / Adventure

BOOK BLURB:

James and Isabel Lancelot have disappeared in mysterious circumstances, leaving behind their children, 10-year-old twins Jemima and Joe. Nobody has a clue what’s happened to them, except for the family cat who was the sole witness to their disappearance. Using the portal of an old book – Shadows from the Past – the couple have travelled back in time but, having left behind the key to bring them home, they are now trapped somewhere in the past. With their parents missing, the twins are sent to live with their Uncle Richard, a professor of ancient history and archaeology, where they soon befriend their new next-door-neighbour, Charlie, a super-brainy boy who is the same age as them.

At the start of the school summer holidays, the three children decide to investigate the old book that had belonged to the twins’ father. Finding the book locked, they’re unable to open it until Jemima discovers she has the key. It was on her mother’s necklace, left abandoned on the attic floor after their parents’ disappearance. And there’s more… The children find a small pouch inside the wooden chest that contained the book and, inside the pouch are four golden charms shaped like owls.

With the book unlocked, an astonishing series of events begins to unfold. The youngsters hear whispering voices carried by a strong breeze that comes out of nowhere and then, a strange cloud fills the room. Through the mist, they see tantalising glimpses of an ancient city. Joe is the first to discover that if they step inside this cloud it will take them to another place. Jemima is surprised to hear her mother’s voice calling to her, reminding her to pick up the all-important key. Then, holding Max, her beloved Tonkinese cat, in her arms, Jemima follows the two boys into the mist. Arriving in the lost city of Atlantis, the children are astounded to find that it was no myth, but a real, historical place. And so their adventures begin…

It doesn’t take them long to realise the owl charms are mini translation tools, enabling them to communicate with the Atlanteans, but when Jemima attaches one to Max’s collar, the large cat begins to speak. The children can’t believe their ears, especially when Max tells them the truth about their parents’ disappearance. The twins are overjoyed to learn that their parents aren’t dead but simply lost in time, and now their quest begins in earnest. They must find and rescue James and Isabel, searching throughout the pages of history. But, first, the youngsters have an important mission – to warn the people of Atlantis about the disaster that will soon destroy their city. Will they succeed? And can they find their way back to the safety of their own time before it's too late?

About the Author:

After teaching French, Latin, and Classical Studies for almost twenty years, Wendy’s career took a new direction when she turned to her first love – books – and decided to devote herself to writing children’s fiction. With the old adage “Write about what you know” in mind, when she first came up with the idea for her series of time-travel adventures, she jumped head-first into the ancient world of classical history and mythology which formed the backdrop for her first three books. As the series moves forward in time, she sets each story in historical periods that have always fascinated her. Although no longer in the classroom, she seeks to entertain her young readers, to engage them, to foster a love of reading, but also to educate. As she takes them on a thrilling journey into the past alongside her three young time-travellers and their talking cat, Wendy hopes that her love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them along the way.

Book Excerpt:

Prologue

Max blinked in surprise, scarcely able to believe his eyes. A cloud of mist had appeared in the middle of the room – he’d never seen anything like that in the house before. What was it? Where had it come from? At its heart, lit by an eerie glow, he glimpsed the shadowy image of an ancient city. It was a bit like a mirage that travellers sometimes see in the desert and, in the same way that a mirage looks real but shimmers in the heat haze before gradually fading from view, so the fuzzy outline of the town now flickered and began to disappear.
Max gasped as a hand suddenly shot out of the mist, clawing desperately at the bare floorboards of the attic, while horrified voices cried out from deep within the cloud.
‘What are you doing, Isabel? Where’s the key? What have you done with it?’
‘I don’t know. I can’t find it. I must have left it on the floor next to the book.’
‘Seriously? But you know we can’t get home again without the key. We’ll be stuck here, and no one will know how to find us.’
‘What? Oh, no, James, we have to go back. What about the twins? This can’t be happening. What are we going to do? Help, someone, help us, please…’
The anguished cries grew fainter as the image of the city continued to fade and the searching hand melted away, its scrabbling fingers the last things to go. Then, all was quiet once more.
Max cocked his head on one side, focusing his aquamarine eyes on the last shreds of mist, but there was no longer any sign of the outstretched arm. The desperate voices had ceased and only the rasping of his own breath broke the silence. They’d vanished. Where had they gone? Alone and afraid, Max remained rooted to the spot, rubbing a paw over his eyes as he stared at the empty space where the vision had been. He settled down to wait for James and Isabel to come back, but he wasn’t to know that the gateway to the past had now closed and that they were trapped inside. The large Tonkinese cat was seized with panic. What should he do? Should he go and fetch help? But how could he do that? Nobody would be able to understand him.
Getting to his feet, he padded over to a carved wooden chest that sat on the floor and peered inside. Its open lid revealed a threadbare, blue velvet lining, but nothing else – it was empty. Hmm, so no clues there, then. Beside the chest lay an old book whose leather cover bore an intricate design. Aha! There, next to the book, Max spotted Isabel’s favourite necklace with its small golden key attached to the delicate chain. Was that what she’d been trying to reach?
He looked around the attic, stumped. Apart from those three objects, no other evidence remained of what had just happened. Realising there was nothing he could do, at least for now, Max headed for the door, heaving a deep sigh as he cast a final glance back over his shoulder.

Great Summer Reads 2020, Day 3, with Wendy Leighton-Porter

Carpinello's Writing Pages presents Day 3 of Loving the Book's Great Summer Reads with my friend and fellow Quest author Wendy Leighton-Porter and her fabulous MG time travel series Shadows from the Past. This time Wendy is talking about book 1 in the series The Shadow of Atlantis. If you haven't had a chance to read Wendy's latest interview on Carpinello's Writing Pages, click here to read.

 So Enjoy Day 3!

A graduate of Exeter University in the early 1980s, I spent 20 years as a teacher of French, Latin and Classical studies, before a change of career led me to writing children's fiction. Currently residing in Abu Dhabi, I live with my husband and our beautiful Tonkinese cat.

The Shadow of Atlantis is the first in a series of time-travel adventures, featuring 3 children and a rather special cat called Max. I'm now working on the 17th book, The Shadow of the Great Fire. The series also includes several novellas that feature Max the talking Tonkinese cat undertaking solo adventures. As I take my young readers on a magical mystery tour through the past, I'm hoping that my love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them too.

Ten-year-old twins Jemima and Joe Lancelot have no idea why their parents have disappeared, but a mysterious old book belonging to their father holds the answer … and so begins a quest to uncover the truth.

Together with Max their Tonkinese cat, and Charlie from next door, the children embark on an epic adventure, travelling back in time to the lost city of Atlantis, unaware of the dangers that await them.

Can they save the people of Atlantis from the disaster which is about to destroy their land forever? And will they find their way back to the safety of their own time before it's too late?

The Shadows from the Past time-travel adventures for Middle Grade readers take place over the course of the school summer holidays. The Shadow of Atlantis is the first book in the series and this is where it all begins. As the mystery unfolds, my young heroes embark on a magical journey into the past and a quest to unlock the secrets of an old book that is a gateway into the pages of history.

Top Ten List:

10 FACTS ABOUT ME
1. I’m a “cataholic” or, more specifically, a “Tonkaholic”. I’m know I’m biased, but I think Tonkinese are the best cats in the world. Beautiful to look at, with jewel-like eyes of aquamarine, they have amazing personalities – super-intelligent, loving, sociable and talkative.
2. I have a passion for history and archaeology. I love delving into the past and am in my element when I get the chance to explore ancient ruins.
3. Books and reading are an essential part of my life. My Dad taught me to read before I even started school and I’ve never been without a book in my hands ever since. I often have two or more on the go at the same time.
4. I’m at my happiest by the sea, with the sound of waves lapping on the shore. I think it must come from being born under the astrological sign of the crab!
5. My favourite time of year is early summer when the weather is warm, but everything is still fresh and green.
6. I’m originally from the UK and was lucky to grow up in a beautiful village in the Cotswolds.
7. My main home is in France, but I’ve been living in Abu Dhabi (in the UAE) for the past 6 years, because of my husband’s job.
8. One of my guilty pleasures is Sticky Toffee Pudding! I can never resist it when it’s on the menu.
9. My husband teases me for being uber-competitive!
10. As a former teacher of French and Latin, I obviously love languages. I speak several, some better than others, and never want to stop learning. I’m ashamed to say that my Arabic hasn’t yet progressed beyond the basic stages, though – it’s hard!

SHADOWS FROM THE PAST

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time and experience history for yourself? And if that wish came true, just when and where would you choose for your trip into the past? That was the dilemma facing me when I decided to embark upon writing my Shadows from the Past series. Just where should my young time-travelling heroes visit during the course of their quest?

For the first step in the journey, I knew my characters would have to venture deep into the past and I was drawn inexorably to the legend of Atlantis, that mythical city which never fails to capture the imagination. And so the voyage began. The Shadow of Atlantis would be a perfect place to start a magical mystery tour through time.

So, where to next? Hmm … fast forward a little, but not too much. How about the Greek island of Crete during the reign of the legendary King Minos? Ah yes, and let’s not forget his labyrinth which contained the fearsome, flesh-eating Minotaur. The Shadow of the Minotaur would provide plenty of thrills, spills and danger.

So far, so good. I was enjoying my foray into Greek myths and wasn’t quite ready to leave them behind just yet, so I wondered where to send my time-travelling children next. My favourite of all the tales from Greek mythology is the story of Troy and I simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to visit the legendary city. The Shadow of the Trojan Horse would be an exciting, if rather perilous, adventure. Thank heavens the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus would be there to help out when things got out of hand … which, of course, they did.

As reluctant as I was to leave Ancient Greece, I knew the time had now come to move on. And how could I not make a stop in the land of the Pharaohs? Ancient Egypt in all its mystical wonder was calling to me and the lure of the boy-king Tutankhamun could not be ignored. Mystery and intrigue galore awaited my young adventurers in The Shadow of the Pyramid, not to mention deadly scorpions and cobras. It was a nail-biting visit for them all.

The ancient world still held me in its grip, but what would be next on the itinerary? For me, the ancient Roman town of Pompeii was a must. So I sent the children back in time to the year 79AD to face a deadly disaster. The Shadow of the Volcano would prove to be a thrilling, if somewhat terrifying, trip. Did my intrepid heroes make it out when Mount Vesuvius erupted? Only just – it was touch and go at the end.

This had all been a bit scary and I decided it was time for some light relief. What could be better than a visit to the mythical land of Camelot? With a little help from Merlin, my time-travelling children were transported back to 5th century Britain in order to fulfil an ancient prophecy and help King Arthur defeat the Saxon invaders. The sixth adventure in the series The Shadow of Camelot turned out to be great fun and I really enjoyed writing it.

I’ve recently completed book number 7, The Shadow of the Norman Arrow, set in the year 1066 with William the Conqueror about to invade England.

However, the journey doesn’t end there – many more adventures still await the children, as I’m planning a total of 16 books in the series. Where will it all end? Well, I’m not going to tell you that, although I already know exactly where each further step in the journey will take my time-travellers. The only clue I’ll give you is that the final destination will be sometime during the 20th century. Why not come along for the ride and find out?
