Great Summer Reads, Day 15, with Cheryl Carpinello

Carpinello's Writing Pages Presents the Final Day of the Great Summer Reads with, guess who? Me!! Remember, I'm the bookends of this event,  and I return now with more Arthurian Legend.

So, Enjoy Day 15!

I’m a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Tales and Legends for Reluctant Readers set in these worlds—Ancient Egypt, Medieval Wales, and coming soon, a hair-raising adventure through ancient worlds in search of 5 rare Phoenix Feathers.

All of my books come with Free study guides and/or extensive Back-of-the-Book materials.

My husband and I love to travel. In 2008, we spent three weeks in Egypt traveling by local train from one end of the country to the other; in 2014, we spent three weeks in the UK driving over 1700 miles through England, Wales, and Scotland; and in 2016, we spent a week in Iceland. We’ve also traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, and Aruba. Our next big adventure will be to Greece and Italy.

When I’m not writing or traveling, our 4 grandkids keep us busy.

Join Gavin, Phillip, and Bryan on their quests and share the adventures that await them in the land of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

Top Ten List:

Favorites

1. Things I like to do when not writing:

I enjoy traveling—I will travel anywhere, any time; reading; spending time with my family; and working in the yard. I’m definitely not a housekeeper.

2. How I relax:

Sitting on the beach in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico!

3. My favorite color:

Blue’s always been my favorite color. It’s the color of my eyes, of the sky, and of the ocean.

4. My favorite drink:

Just can’t pass up a good margarita!

5. My favorite snack:

I devour nachos and Auntie Anne’s pretzels!

6. My your favorite movies:

Star Wars, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, and The Mummy. I’ve watched each of these so many times that I’ve lost track, and my husband shakes his head when he sees one on and says, “Really?” I just smile.

7. I am a night owl:

I don’t usually go to sleep until midnight, and now that I’m retired, I’m comfortable not seeing the sun come up in the morning:)

8. My favorite food:

That would be a smothered shredded beef burrito followed by coconut ice cream.

9. My favorite concerts:

Elton John, Sting, Paul McCartney, and Mumford & Sons.

10. If I could live anywhere, it would be in Colorado.

We have the best weather—All four seasons. I live next to the foothills, and a drive up in the Rockies is a cure for any ailment. I can see the world famous Red Rock Amphitheater from my couch, and if the wind is just right, we can hear the concerts. My immediate family is all here, except for one sister who lives in Texas, poor soul. In addition to being a retired teacher, I’m also a retired airline employee. So, when I need a change, it’s so easy just to hop a plane and go to the beach.

Great Summer Reads 2020, Day 1, with Cheryl Carpinello

From June 1st through June 19th, Carpinello's Writing Pages will be participating in Loving the Books' Great Summer Reads (GSR) 2020. GSR will introduce and maybe even re-introduce you to 15 great books and authors as well as give you opportunities to enter Giveways each day. I am please to say that I will be providing the bookends for the Great Summer Reads.

Before we get started, Carpinello's Writing Pages wants to remind you, as in the 2019 GSR, that not all the books you will see will be suitable for children, middle grader, and/or YA readers. We all need help in this world, and Carpinello's Writing Pages loves helping out other authors.

So ENJOY and Here We Go!

Morgan le Fay, sixth-century Queen of Gore and the only major character not killed off by Mark Twain in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, vows revenge upon the Yankee Hank Morgan. She casts a spell to take her to 1879 Connecticut so she may waylay Sir Boss before he can travel back in time to destroy her world. But the spell misses by 300 miles and 200 years, landing her in the Washington, D.C., of 2079, replete with flying limousines, hovering office buildings, virtual-reality television, and sundry other technological marvels.

Whatever is a time-displaced queen of magic and minions to do? Why, rebuild her kingdom, of course—two kingdoms, in fact: as Campaign Boss for the reelection of American President Malory Beckham Hinton, and as owner of the London Knights world-champion baseball franchise.

Written as though by the old master himself, King Arthur’s Sister in Washington’s Court by Mark Twain as channeled by Kim Iverson Headlee offers laughs, love, and a candid look at American society, popular culture, politics, baseball... and the human heart.

Arthurian Legend on a Roll!

Check out this news on my Arthurian Legend Books.

Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend is FREE on Amazon April 1-3.

Download this middle grade Arthurian Adventure and be ready for the sequel Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend—Cedwyn's Story later this year.

Get it Here.

What they're saying about Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend:

One of those rare books where the author understood that less is more and fully delivers in making each page valuable and interesting. The sighting of a unicorn in the book is an example of this--the delicate handling of the scene leaves the reader as much in awe as Guinevere over the magical beast.

Synopsis:

At the dawn of Camelot, one young girl is about to take her place beside the greatest king in England’s history….

She is a mere child of twelve. But in these medieval days, this is the age when childish things must be put away and greater responsibilities accepted—all in preparation for a betrothal of marriage.

For young Lady Guinevere, on the advent of her thirteenth Birth Day, the whole idea is quite unbearable. After all, what could be better than spending her youth playing with her best friend Cedwyn, roaming the grounds around the castle looking for mythical creatures or hunting rabbits?

However, the wizard Merlyn—her teacher and friend—knows that destiny has a way of catching up with a person. His arrival sets in motion a series of events that will lead Guinevere to her destiny whether she is ready for it or not.

Young Knights of the Round Table: The King's Ransom is now available on Amazon—other retailers to follow—with the new cover. I recently re-acquired the electronic rights back from the original publisher.

What they're saying about Young Knights:

"Pull out those swords and slide into your armor—can one slide into something that bulky?—Doesn't matter because this story will still feed the fantasy of children...who dream of the days of knighthood"—Bookworm for Kids

Synopsis:

In medieval Wales, eleven-year-old Prince Gavin, thirteen-year-old orphan Philip, and fifteen-year-old blacksmith's apprentice Bryan are brought together in friendship by one they call the Wild Man. When an advisor to the king is killed and a jewelled medallion is stolen from the king’s treasury, the Wild Man is accused of the theft and murder.

Filled with disbelief at the arrest of the Wild Man, the three friends embark upon a knight’s quest to save their friend’s life. To succeed, the three must confront their fears and insecurities, and one of them will have to disclose the biggest secret of all.

Join Gavin, Philip, and Bryan on their quest and share the adventures that await them in the land of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

Meet YA Author Nancy M Bell

Carpinello's Writing Pages welcomes back Canadian author Nancy M Bell. Nancy is the author of The Cornwall Adventures, a popular YA series.

First, a bit about Nancy:

Nancy M Bell is a proud Albertan and lives near Balzac, Alberta with her husband and various critters. She has publishing credits in poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Nancy has presented at the Surrey International Writers Conference and the Writers Guild of Alberta Conference. She is currently working on Book 3 of her series The Cornwall Adventures.

Why did you pick to write books for YA?

When I wrote Laurel’s Quest and A Step Beyond, the first two books in The Cornwall Adventures series, the characters presented themselves and compelled me to tell their stories. They were teenagers and so I just sort of fell into the YA genre. I personally like reading the genre so that probably had something to do with it too.

What types of books do you like to read?

Honestly, I’m pretty eclectic. I love fantasy, Charles de Lint, Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, and Jonathan Stroud, but I also have all of Patrick Taylor’s Irish Country series, as well as Jack Whyte and Diana Gabaldon. A further inspection of my crowded bookshelf reveals a ton of research books on ley lines, earth energy, megaliths, Irish legends, horse books, a Zane Grey collection…the list goes on.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do?

I enjoy spending time with my horses and dogs, taking a drive into the mountains, and visiting my grandkids. I’m trying to teach myself to play the tin whistle, without much success I might add, but it’s fun. I love to read and browse through used books stores and antique stores.

Tell us about A Step Beyond and how the story came to be.

A Step Beyond is the second book in The Cornwall Adventures series and is really about a young teenager coming to grips with his past and gaining confidence in himself and others. Gort's—main character—name comes from the Celtic Tree Ogham and is associated with Ivy which represents the search for self. This is exactly what Gort is doing. A secondary character in Laurel’s Quest, I really felt he needed his own story told. I also had quite a few requests from readers who wanted to know what happened to him after Laurel’s Quest ended, so I wrote his story. It involves time travel which the first book did not, but it works for his journey. Gort goes from being a skinny shy kid to Sir Gawain, one of King Arthur’s trusted knights. He learns he has only to look inside to find the courage he needs to face the demons in his present life. I’ll leave it at that, but I do hope you will seek A Step Beyond out and follow Gort on his journey.

Here's a peek at A Step Beyond:

Legend says that land once stretched from Lands End in Cornwall as far as the Isles of Scillies, thirty miles out in the Atlantic. It is to this mythical land that Gort Treliving escapes when his Uncle Daniel beats him senseless. He steps away from his corporeal body and walks into the mist of oblivion, seeking only to escape the pain. To Gort’s surprise, he finds he is Sir Gawain, one of King Arthur’s knights. He is also the partner of a wonderful grey war stallion who can telepathically speak to him.

While he is caught up in a wild chase across the countryside to rescue King Arthur’s kidnapped queen and her lady, Gort as Gawain, tries to puzzle out the strange visions of another life that assail him at the most inopportune times.

Have you written other books? If so, tell us a bit about them.

Laurel’s Quest
is the first book in The Cornwall Adventures series. That’s the only other book in this genre so far. Some of my other works include No Absolution, a unique retelling of Jack the Ripper's story, and Storm's Refuge, a romance set in the Alberta prairie.

What’s next for your writing? Are you working on a new story?

Yes! I am half way through a prequel to Laurel’s Quest which tells the story of Laurel’s Gramma Bella and how she came to Canada and southern Alberta. The working title is Arabella’s Secret. It delves a bit deeper into the relationship between some of the older secondary characters in Laurel. Something that readers have asked for as well. There is a fourth book as well in the works, actually the third in the Cornwall series. Laurel returns to Cornwall. Its title is Coming Home.

What advice do you have for other authors?

Keep writing, no matter how discouraged you might get, or how busy life becomes. Nobody can tell your stories but you.

Anything else you want readers to know?

I hope you enjoy my stories, and I’d love it if you let me know what you like, or didn’t like.

Thanks for having me on your blog, Cheryl, and congratulations on your own writing successes. I enjoy reading your stories.

The Year 2015 and the Kid Lit Blog Hop #51

Here's hoping your holidays and the New Year brought joy, cheer, and serenity to you and your family. Before getting to the Hop, I want to share some exciting events happening in 2015.

3 Authors.  3 Continents. Unlimited Adventures!

After months of work, Fiona Ingram, Wendy Leighton-Porter, and I have launched our new combined website: The Quest Books. The site is packed with our MG/YA stories from the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. When you sign up for our newsletter, you will receive an ebook of your choice from any of our books! We will be trading off on the newsletter with Fiona doing the first on. Sign up today so you don't miss her story behind the Chronicles of Stone series.

 Back to Arthurian Legend

For the last 4 years, I've been immersed in the mystery and magic of Ancient Egypt. With the publication of Sons of the Sphinx in October 2014, I once again return to that land which has given the world the magnificent and everlasting legend of King Arthur.

I'm finishing up the first draft of the second Guinevere book. On the Eve of Legend was meant to be a stand alone story whose sole purpose was to introduce young readers to this legendary princess. However, over the years, I've not only heard from readers who adored Guinevere's friend Cedwyn and wanted to know what became of him, I've also had this young boy invading my mind. It seems that Cedwyn has his heart set on being a knight, not of Arthur, but of his friend Guinevere.

So, I've finally given into Cedwyn, and the second book is titled Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend—Cedwyn's Story. Those who loved the innocence of the young Guinevere will need to remember that even the young grow up. This story takes place about three years after the first, and Arthur is busy bringing all of Britain under the same flag. The adventures and trials that await Guinevere and Cedwyn will test their strength, their friendship, and the country.

The Ultimate Reading Quest
