Writing Tips & the 83rd Kid Lit Blog Hop

Carpinello's Writing Pages is back with writing tips from authors we've interviewed in January and February 2016. Please feel feel to leave your own advice in the comments.

I guess I would try to demystify novel-writing as 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. There are many good ideas for books, but authors are people who develop ideas into books. Sure, I’ve heard the stories of authors sitting down, starting to type, and hammering out their novels from beginning to end (with a slap-dash pull of the last page from what in my mind is the cartridge of a typewriter). But that’s uncommon, in my opinion. I use many practical tools to maintain control over my writing—outlining, charting, diagramming, deep questioning—and I revise, revise, and revise, then revise some moreMarie C. Collins, author of A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp

Keep writing. Keep networking. Make yourself a real person. Enable people to get to know you. One thing I have learned about being an author is it is so much more than just writing. You must interact on social media. This is more than saying, “buy my book.” It is a matter of letting people know what your interests are and sharing about them. I don’t sell a book by saying, “buy my book”. I sell books when I introduce myself, talk about my kids, and why I write. Eventually, someone says, “what is your book about?” That is when I sell a bookKandi Wyatt, author of Dragon's Future

The main advice I have is don’t give up. From what I’ve read, it seems like every author has a different process, but all seem to agree that you need to keep writing, every day if possible. I’ve found it incredibly helpful to set small writing goals and to track my first draft word count. When I first started my goal was to write only 300 words a day. This was so small that it seemed ridiculously easy. Most days I wrote over 700 words. That doesn’t sound like much, but it added up very quicklDavid Brough, author of Del Ryder and the Crystal Seed

Being an indie author is so much more than just writing the manuscript. You need a great editor, formatter, and cover design person. Also, you need to know how to market a book in a constantly evolving media world. Surrounding yourself with people who have these tools is keyTricia Copeland, author of Is this Me?

Author Branding & the 75th Kid Lit Blog Hop

Author Branding is a term that I've heard tossed around Indie Author conversations for several years now. And while it's been eight years last month since I published Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend, I've not given branding any thought.

I've worked hard at marketing my Arthurian and Ancient World stories for Reluctant Readers, and I've been fortunate to have some success along the way. A couple of years ago, I had an instructor at a private college back East pick up Guinevere for her Honors English class. Just last year, I had a public school teacher buy a classroom set of Sons of the Sphinx and another buy Sons for one of the class reading groups.

I've had success with all of my books at local fairs, craft shows, and fund-raisers. I've been invited into classrooms—too many to count—over the last eight years to share my love of writing and Arthurian Legend with students eager to try their hand at writing a medieval story. For three years, I enjoyed working with the Colorado Girl Scouts—Brownies, Juniors, & Cadets—as they spent half days immersing themselves in Medieval Times. And, I've been fortunate to have a supportive family who've worked beside me.

Now I'm heading down the author branding path. My books have been picked up by a distributor, and Author Branding is first on their list. So far, in addition to this blog, Beyond Today Educator website, and The Quest Books website—which I share with Fiona Ingram and Wendy Leighton-Porter—I have a new author website Author Cheryl Carpinello. It is up, but awaiting my branding to match colors and fonts. This year, all of my current books and the second book in my Guinevere trilogy will have new covers reflecting my author branding. I hope you'll visit my new site and follow me on this next adventure.

And Now,

Pembroke Castle in Wales and the Kid Lit Blog Hop #49

Pembroke Castle is the home of Prince Gavin in Young Knights of the Round Table: The King's Ransom. A visit here was a must on our trip to Wales in September 2014.

Today, Pembroke Castle sits on a hill on the edge of the town of Pembroke. The main entrance for visitors sits on the street. We walk around the entire structure, and at times we are well below the castle walls.

From the top of the battlements, it is easy to imagine we are looking at the land as it might have existed back in 400-500 A.D.

Those same battlements are from where Prince Gavin watched as his father King Wallace, his brothers, and the rest of the knights returned with The Wild Man.

It is from the Great Keep of Pembroke Castle that Gavin first enters the story.

I had envisioned Pembroke Castle being larger than Manorbier Castle (see http://carpinelloswritingpages.blogspot.com/2014/09/manorbier-castle-and-kid-lit-blog-hop-46.html), and I found this to be true upon our visit. Here is the inside of the castle grounds.

Also, as with Manorbier Castle, Pembroke Castle in the days of my story would have been made of wood, and little—if any—remains of that Pembroke. I hope you've enjoyed this visit to historical Pembroke Castle.

AND NOW:

Welcome to the 49th Kid Lit Blog Hop where we continue to develop a dynamic and engaged community of children's books bloggers, authors, publishers, and publicists.

This Hop brings you an interview with two YA authors Christopher Mannino and Brae Wyckoff. And, for a special treat, MG/YA author Marva Dasef stops by to talk about what it takes to produce an audio book and has a surprise for readers..

Remember, you are always more than welcome to join us by popping in a post and hopping around to meet some of your fellow Kid Lit bloggers and authors!

*** We are looking for a permanent host who is willing to be part of our regular group. The responsibilities include posting about the Hop, entering your link early in the Hop, and hopping around to between 10 and 15 blogs as ambassadors of the Hop and leaving comments on links entered in the linky list. Please contact me if you are interested. ***

Happy Hopping everyone and enjoy the Hop!

Tintagel, Arthur, and the Kid Lit Blog Hop #48

We went to the UK in September in search of King Arthur and those places associated with him in both fact and fiction. Our list was long, and we missed some, but one of the more spectacular sights was Tintagel Castle.

Tintagel sits on the Northern Atlantic Coast of Cornwell on an island connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land,

and then a climb up a steep stairway.

The remains of the castle called Tintagel today are from the 12th century. The stone walls and other remains are breathtaking in spite of that.

What inspired me was the real possibly that in the days of King Arthur (300-500), this could have held a wooden castle. The location here is one of strategic importance on the coast. Renegades from the sea could be seen for some distance.

And the protected cove below would have provided a safe place to land supply ships during a seige, or a secluded hideout in the caves surrounding the bay. The one on the left is referred to as Merlin's Cave.

As I continue to work on the sequel Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend—Cedwyn's Story, I wouldn't be surprised to find this location in there!

Now, onto the Hop!

Welcome to the 48th Kid Lit Blog Hop where we continue to develop a dynamic and engaged community of children's books bloggers, authors, publishers, and publicists.

This Hop brings you interviews MG/PreTeen author Christine Meunier

Glastonbury Tor & Abbey and the Kid Lit Blog Hop #47

One of the highlights of our trip to the UK was the time we spent in Glastonbury at the Tor and the Abbey. While die-hard Arthurian scholars scoff at any association with Arthur, for lovers of the romantic—stories of adventure involving knights, kings, damsels in distress, chivalry, mystery, and fantasy—Arthurian Legend, Glastonbury is a must-see.

Here is Glastonbury Tor seen from below. Originally host to an ancient oratory, the structure seen here is what's left of a monastery built around the 15th century. I'm partial to this site as it is the cover for my short King Arthur's Story.

This is the same structure seen from the ground. Another example of the magnificent architecture from medieval times.

That's me standing by one of the arched entrances.

One of my favorite pieces is this wooden cross—a gift from Queen Elizabeth II to the Glastonbury Abbey—because it bears these words:

"It marks a Christian sanctuary so Ancient that only Legend can record its origin."

Here I kneel by what was reputed to be the re-buried remains of Arthur and Guinevere. Monks were said to have found the remains on Abbey grounds in 1191. Who's to say?!

Last, I leave you with one of the entrance arches of the Abbey Church still standing. Even from this picture it is possible to see the intricate and meticulous design.

Now, onto the Hop!

Welcome to the 47th Kid Lit Blog Hop where we continue to develop a dynamic and engaged community of children's books bloggers, authors, publishers, and publicists.

This hop brings interviews with children's writers Stephanie Dikey and Thereza Howling.

Manorbier Castle and Kid Lit Blog Hop #46

After spending September touring the UK, I'm back with the Hop this month more relaxed and focused. I do want to share my fabulous trip with you, but I promise not to bore you with my vacation pictures!

Learning that I would be in Wales, the staff at Manorbier Castle—one of the settings of Young Knights of the Round Table: The King's Ransom—invited me to stop by for an author visit. To say I was ecstatic would be putting it mildly! This is what greeted me as I entered castle grounds:

Touring the castle where young Prince Gavin's quest takes him filled me with awe. Granted it wasn't exactly the same castle—mine was a wooden castle—but it was close enough for me!

I even found the Smuggler's Passage that was eventually cut from my story.

I so enjoyed getting a look at the land of Arthurian Legend. Now onto a new month of Hopping!

Welcome to the 46th Kid Lit Blog Hop where we continue to develop a dynamic and engaged community of children's books bloggers, authors, publishers, and publicists.

This Hop, I will be bringing you interviews with two Middle Grade authors you may not have met yet: Michael Selden and C. L. Collar. Be sure to stop by to learn about them and their books.

So, you are always more than welcome to join us by popping in a post and hopping around to meet some of your fellow Kid Lit bloggers and authors! We are pleased to be welcoming a few co-hosts this week: Stanley & Katrina, who have just released their latest book, The Observations of the Obstreperous Animals (Stanley & Katrina Book 2) and Rebecca, the author behind the book blog, A Book Long Enough. Welcome to Stanley & Katrina and Rebecca!
